FAQ's

What is Physie?
Physie (short for Physical Culture) is a unique and dynamic sport that blends fun, fitness and friendship for girls and women of all ages.
Combining dance styles like jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, aerobic dance, and rthymic gymnastics into one exciting class. Set to fun, carefully selected, upbeat pop music, our choreography is designed to be age-appropriate for girls as young as 3 through to ladies of all ages.
Each age group learns a set syllabus that builds throughout the year, with routines taught consistently across all Physie clubs in Australia. These routines are performed in a variety of settings, from local showcases to regional and national competitions. These performances or competitions are a highlight for many; fostering confidence, performance skills, and teamwork.
Physie is more than a sport, it’s a pathway to fitness, strength, and self-assurance. Members develop good posture, flexibility, musicality, coordination, and discipline, while making lasting friendships in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Whether you're 3 or 73+, Physie offers a fun and engaging way to stay fit, build confidence, and be part of a vibrant community.
When can I start?
We recommend starting in Term 1, as this is when all our dancers begin learning the new syllabus for the year. This gives you the best chance to absorb the choreography right from the start. However, if you join later in the year, that’s absolutely fine! We’ll do everything we can to help you catch up and feel confident in class.
Plus, when you register with BJP, you’ll gain access to the Syllabus Music, and around May, the Syllabus Video is usually available to download, so you can practice at home whenever it suits you! No matter when you start, you’ll have the tools to stay on track and enjoy your Physie journey.
What do you do in class?
After greeting your friends and receiving a warm welcome from your teacher, we’ll begin with a fun warm-up. Then, we’ll focus on posture, body alignment, toe pointing, and building strength and flexibility in the legs and body through marching. If you’ve never marched before, it might feel a little funny at first, but don’t worry, you’ll pick it up in no time!
Next, we dive into the syllabus. Each group works on their own syllabus, building on it as the year progresses. We dedicate time to refining technique, increasing strength and flexibility, and building endurance along the way. At the same time, we’re developing an incredible range of skills such as discipline, coordination, posture, musicality, and confidence, to name just a few. Every lesson is thoughtfully designed to ensure steady progress, with activities tailored to the group’s ability level.
For our littlest members, we’ve created an engaging and fun-filled program specially designed for their needs. We’re confident your little one will love it!
What is the BJP syllabus?
The BJP syllabus features six engaging routines set to modern, upbeat music. These routines are designed to teach essential dance skills while building fitness, strength, and flexibility. Each age group has its own unique routines and music, with choreography carefully created to suit all skill levels, ensuring everyone can enjoy and achieve success.
For ages 5 years to ladies:
• Marching: Focuses on good posture, body alignment, toe points, and building strength and stretch in the legs and body.
• Warm-Up/Cardio: A fun and energetic cardio workout that targets correct positions while improving strength, stamina, and control through aerobic dance.
• Floor Drill: Performed on the floor, this exercise develops flexibility, core strength, and body control.
• Relaxed/Contemporary: A beautiful routine inspired by classical ballet and contemporary dance, designed to teach musicality, grace, and turnout.
• Exercises: A standing routine that challenges balance, control, strength, flexibility, and precision in movement.
• Dance: A vibrant, modern jazz-style routine performed to the latest music. This routine emphasises musicality, expression, strength, and stamina while encouraging performers to shine with confidence and a big smile.
For preschoolers (ages 2-4): Our preschool program is the perfect introduction to dance for little ones. Through fun, engaging classes, they’ll develop coordination, rhythm, balance, fitness, strength, and discipline. Each week, they dance to a variety of songs and nursery rhymes, learning valuable skills to assist them in everyday life. Of course, they’re too busy dancing, singing, and having fun to realize how much they’re learning!
How old do you have to be to start Physie?
Typically, girls can start from around 3 years old, as long as they’re comfortable being apart from their parent for about half an hour. Rest assured, we have a wonderful viewing room that looks directly into the hall where your little one will be having their class. You’re welcome to help them settle in and then watch from there.
What do I wear or bring to class?
Bumblebees (Preschoolers aged 3-4): once registered and settled into classes for the term, they’ll each receive a yellow tutu. While we believe that a black leotard compliments the tutu, it’s not required.
Juniors through to Ladies (this is any age group from 5+): we suggest black, fitted workout gear such as leggings, bike shorts, and a black top. This will help your teacher see your positions clearly and refine your technique without the distraction of loose or baggy clothing. That said, we want you to feel comfortable, so this is simply a suggestion, not a requirement.
Please note, no footwear is needed and don’t forget to bring along a drink bottle and your biggest smile! 😊
Can I attend both Monday and Wednesday's classes?
Yes of course! We would love to have you. In fact we highly recommend attending as many classes as possible.
Do you have to compete?
To get the full Physie experience, we encourage all members to participate in competitions, though they are completely optional. That said, competitions are a fantastic way to build confidence and connect with other Physie girls from across Australia! They provide a wonderful opportunity to perform in a safe and supportive environment, with both individual and team performance options available for members aged 5 years through to adults.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced Physie participant, performances are a fun way to improve confidence, develop team spirit, and create lasting friendships. Most importantly, they offer a great sense of accomplishment and, of course, lots of fun!
